RUBEN ROMERO
In the 2000 Summer Olympics Ruben's version of the classic Malaguena was used as background music for Elise Ray's floor exercise program. This generated airplay to a worldwide audience of millions of people
Ruben Romero was nominated in 2000 for four Native American Music Awards, which included Best New Age Category, Best Instrumental Recording, Best World Music Album, and Best Latin Album. Ruben is proud to announce he won in two categories: Best Latin Album and Best World Music Album for his CD titled Native Flamenco, which includes artist Robert Tree Cody on flute and Tony Redhouse on percussion.
Ruben Romero also released Love Letter and Christmas at the Mission, which include talented female guitarist Carolyn Muller in many new arrangements and original music sure to generate a wonderful and peaceful listening experience for all.
Santa Fe native Ruben Romero has had a distinguished career as a Spanish guitarist. Inspired by the musical interests of his older brothers, he studied flamenco guitar in Spain and regularly joined other flamenco artists in public performances and private juergas. He also appeared with the Denver Symphony and Minnesota Orchestra and has been the subject of a musical documentary (Simple Treasures) aired nationwide on PBS.
Ruben's proudest efforts were as arranger, composer and recording artist. Most of his recordings (over 20 releases to date) are devoted to his original compositions. Underlying his work are traces of the mesmerizing melodies and rhythms that have expressed the joys and sorrows of the gitano soul of his gypsy ancestors.
From the lyricism of his heartfelt "L'grimas para Mi Hermano," written in memory of his late brother, accomplished flamenco dancer Vicente Romero, to the driving energy of his rumbas, Ruben's engaging style distinguished him as one of the primary innovators of the Santa Fe Sound.
