One of the earliest texts relating to yoga was compiled by a scholar named Pantajali, who established the most prevalent yoga theories and practices of his time. In Sanskrit, yoga means “to unite.” It is the union of mind, body, and spirit, originally focused on applying and understanding the world. Yoga’s focus later changed, and self­-awareness became the goal.

Yoga as practiced in the West is commonly focused on the physical performance of postures, known as asanas. However, classical yoga is more than mastering postures and increasing one’s flexibility or strength. The traditional practice of yoga has always been to “bring about a profound transformation in the person through the transcendence of ego” (Feuerstein). Swami Sivananda bases modern yoga on six basic principles: relaxation, exercise, breathing, proper diet, positive thinking, and meditation.
